Introduction

Sirmione Jewelry is a high-end jewelry brand that offers natural and lab grown diamond jewelry set in 14K gold or platinum at affordable prices. While other brands offer comparable prices, Sirmione Jewelry promises high quality GH-VS diamonds.

To sell their jewelry, Sirmione Jewelry needed a responsive e-commerce website with detailed product listings that was easy to update, easy to scale, and easy to browse. The result is an elegant storefront created and customized with Shopify.

Website Features

As an e-commerce website, Sirmione Jewelry had specific needs, including detailed product listings. The website itself also needed to be easy to browse, easy to update, and easy to scale. In this section, I talk about each of these challenges in turn and how I created the site to address them.

Detailed Product Listings

Sirmione Jewelry wanted to offered several options for customers to customize their jewelry. The necessary categories were: Diamond Type, Metal Type, and Size. For rings, which require a wide range of sizes, this resulted in over 80 variants for each product. One variant for the ring on the right, for example, would be Natural Diamond, 14K Rose Gold, Size 6. The number of variants posed a challenge because many e-commerce website builders have a limit on variants. I explored possible workarounds for these limits, but none were ideal.

Ultimately, we settled on the Shopify platform over alternatives such as Wix or Webflow for this reason. Shopify allows for 100 variants per product, which was enough to suit our needs.

Easy to Browse

Usability is especially important for e-commerce websites as frustration can lead to users clicking away from the site and not making a purchase. For this reason, we decided on a layout that is easy to browse. Although Shopify's platform did not have a built in way to increase the number of products per page, it was possible to customize the code to display 50 products before the user would need to click to the next page. This was a marked improvement from the previous 20 product limit.

Easy to Update

Sirmione Jewelry needed a platform that would be easy to update given their limited technological abilities. It would not do to need to hire a website designer to simply add products or update prices. This is another reason we decided on the Shopify platform. It allowed for easy product updates without needing to utilize the website designer.

Easy to Scale

The final important feature that Sirmione Jewelry needed for this website was one that is easy to scale as the business grew. This means, for example, that product listings pages needed to be dynamic instead of static, something that would look good whether there were 10 rings or 100 rings. I addressed this issue by deciding on a simple layout for the product listings: a grid with 5 columns where subsequent rows could be easily added as the business expanded and offered more products.

Conclusion

Sirmione Jewelry was very happy with the e-commerce website. As the designer, I was proud to have been able to deliver what was needed. The project was not without challenges, but resolving each challenge resulted in a better experience for Sirmione Jewelry and their users.
